Which would you think is better: writing notes longhand or typing them?  How about underlining and highlighting?  Have you ever heard of a Bullet Journal?  Do you know how to draw your notes?

All of these techniques were summarized in this article by Fast Company, and we recommend that you read it in it's entirety after we give you the Cliffs Notes version.

Let's start with what doesn't work well for retention - based on studies:

      • Highlighting books
      • Highlighting your own notes
      • Underlining important points
      • Rereading your notes to refresh your memory
      • Typing your notes on a laptop

That was a big surprise.  It's a wonder any of us made it through college.  Turns out these are all passive techniques that aren't as good as active.

So if those don't work, what does?

      • Handwriting your notes in longhand
      • Shorthand - the old and newer versions
      • A Bullet Journal (We didn't know this one either, so here's a video: link)
      • Drawing your notes

And believe it or not, researchers found that drawing your notes works best because it combines several skills: consideration of physical properties, visualization, and use of motor skills. If you want to see a good example, go to this link: Sketchnotes.  But if you want to read the entire article, which we recommend, go to this Fast Company LINK.  Great stuff, and now we all want a "do over" on college.

Ken Robinson's 10 Favorite TED Talks on Education

We all love Ken Robinson's TED talks, and many of his have TED Talks have reached and influenced millions of people in our space.  But have you ever wondered what Ken's favorite TED Talks on Education are?  Well here's his list:

Playlist (10 talks): Ken Robinson: 10 talks on education

      • "Babies and young children are like the R&D division of the human species," says psychologist Alison Gopnik. Her research explores the sophisticated intelligence-gathering and decision-making that babies are really doing when they play.

      • At the INK Conference, Arvind Gupta shares simple yet stunning plans for turning trash into seriously entertaining, well-designed toys that kids can build themselves — while learning basic principles of science and design.

      • Onstage at TED2013, Sugata Mitra makes his bold TED Prize wish: Help me design the School in the Cloud, a learning lab in India, where children can explore and learn from each other — using resources and mentoring from the cloud. Hear his inspiring vision for Self Organized Learning Environments, and learn more at ted.com/prize.

      • Jose Antonio Abreu is the charismatic founder of a youth orchestra system that has transformed thousands of kids' lives in Venezuela. Here he shares his amazing story and unveils a TED Prize wish that could have a big impact in the US and beyond.
      • Kakenya Ntaiya made a deal with her father: She would undergo a traditional Maasai rite of passage, female circumcision, if he would let her go to high school. Ntaiya tells the fearless story of continuing on to college, and of working with her village elders to build a school for girls in her community, changing the destiny of 125 young women.

      • Mae Jemison is an astronaut, a doctor, an art collector, a dancer ... Telling stories from her own education and from her time in space, she calls on educators to teach both the arts and sciences, both intuition and logic, as one — to create bold thinkers.
      • Educating the poor is more than just a numbers game, says Shukla Bose. She tells the story of her groundbreaking Parikrma Humanity Foundation, which brings hope to India's slums by looking past the daunting statistics and focusing on treating each child as an individual.
      • By turn hilarious and haunting, poet Shane Koyczan puts his finger on the pulse of what it's like to be young and … different. "To This Day," his spoken-word poem about bullying, captivated millions as a viral video (created, crowd-source style, by 80 animators). Here, he gives a glorious, live reprise with backstory and violin accompaniment by Hannah Epperson.
      • Charles Leadbeater went looking for radical new forms of education — and found them in the slums of Rio and Kibera, where some of the world's poorest kids are finding transformative new ways to learn. And this informal, disruptive new kind of school, he says, is what all schools need to become.
      • Salman Khan talks about how and why he created the remarkable Khan Academy, a carefully structured series of educational videos offering complete curricula in math and, now, other subjects. He shows the power of interactive exercises, and calls for teachers to consider flipping the traditional classroom script — give students video lectures to watch at home, and do "homework" in the classroom with the teacher available to help.
